Doubts Over Statins Building
Every day more horror stories emerge about using the popular cholesterol lowering statins. Side effects have included lost memory/cognitive problems, kidney and liver conditions, and muscle problems.

It’s a complicated and touchy issue, being raised at a time when 36 million Americans are being told they should take the drugs, although currently only 11 million are following that advice.
Some experts believe many patients encounter more side effects, both minor and more serious, than previously thought.

The fact is these are serious and strong drugs. More people will be encouraged to take them as the "range" for healthy cholesterol continues to shrink. You must make an informed choice. Weigh the risks. To find out more about these drugs and their alarming side effects click the link below.

Doubts Over Statins Building
Every day more horror stories emerge about using the popular cholesterol lowering statins. Side effects have included lost memory/cognitive problems, kidney and liver conditions, and muscle problems. The kidney and liver problems are the most serious because they are life threatening. With the statin drug Crestor, there is now a strong link to liver and kidney problems, and it is under serious investigation. Memory problems in some have been so severe that patients actually suffer from a type of short-term amnesia. One patient had this type of amnesia, stopped taking the drug and returned to normal. He was later counseled by his doctor to return to a statin drug for his cholesterol in spite of his reaction. Once back on the statin drug the amnesia returned but was far worse and lasted for 12 hours.

It’s a complicated and touchy issue, being raised at a time when 36 million Americans are being told they should take the drugs, although currently only 11 million are following that advice. If you believe the past clinical trials, the occurrence of side effects is very modest. Those trials generally report side effects in less than 1% to 2% of patients. Notably, the drug company often funds these trials and the participants are very “healthy” and pre-selected for the study.

But there are doctors whose personal experience is very different from what the trials report. Some experts believe that 20% or more of patients encounter some side effects, both minor and more serious than previously thought. One theory about the side effects is that along with cholesterol, statins may lower levels of omega-3 fat, which is vital to a healthy brain. Another possibility is that the drugs also lower levels of a substance known as Coenzyme Q10, an anti-oxidant and essential nutrient for cells. In addition, cholesterol itself is needed for the basic metabolism of every cell in the body. When the level is lowered too much, problems can arise.

The fact is these are serious and strong drugs. More people will be encouraged to take them as the medical community and drug companies push to increase the range of people that qualify as having high cholesterol levels. You must make an informed choice. Weigh the risks. You may be able to lower your cholesterol with a few lifestyle changes instead of taking a myriad of drugs for a condition that is not necessarily an indicator of poor health or heart disease. Dr. Olson can help you evaluate the information and give you natural and healthy ways to decrease your cholesterol and reduce your risk of heart disease. A pill for the rest of your life is not the best way for most people to remove this problem.

News Tidbit Wash Veggies
Buy organic! This produce has stricter regulation. It is still important to clean these as well. A good solution for cleaning your vegetables is to get two clean spray bottles, Hydrogen peroxide (like from the drugstore), and plain white or apple cider vinegar. Put the peroxide in one bottle and the vinegar in the other. Spritz your produce with both the vinegar and hydrogen peroxide and then rinse with water. This is also a great way to clean countertops, sinks, and sponges. You can also put both the peroxide and vinegar into your sink with water to soak your veggies, but the spritz might be easier for you.

The “O” Zone: Life’s Rhythms
Everything in life has a rhythm. Nature is full of examples. Bird calls, Insect noise, the chirp of a cricket, traffic, light, sound, and the easy embrace of a healthy hug. Crickets chirp to a rhythm based on temperature. You can nearly determine the temperature by recognizing the frequency of the cricket’s song. Count the number of cricket chirps in 15 seconds and add that number to 48. This is very close to the temperature. Color is just a manifestation of the frequency, or rhythm, of light an object cannot absorb. All similar colored objects have a similar ability to absorb or accept certain frequencies of light. We recognize them by the light they reflect, not by the light they absorb. Isn’t it interesting that we are recognized by that which we cannot accept rather than that which we do?

Each person has a rhythm in life. We create the rhythm of our life from our heart and our soul, consciously or subconsciously. Whether we are aware of it or not we surround ourselves with this veil of vibration. It acts as an attractor and a repellent. It will attract other people or circumstances that carry compatible frequencies. Or we will repel incompatible frequencies based on our deepest needs and desires. If we have chaos in life, we are living at a frequency that attracts that matching frequency. If we have peace we are living in a rhythm that attracts a peaceful frequency. Rhythms can act like the opposing sides of Velcro. They are both different, but they adhere vigorously to each other when they come in contact.

The great thing about this is that we can control our rhythm. It takes great effort and attention, but as we learn to do this we learn to attract into our life anything we want; health, happiness, love, money or peace. We are like a huge complex radio that can tune into any station or rhythm we want. Learn what it is you really want in life and how to tune your radio to that rhythm. How much fun is this? Wow! Life is amazing!

Menopausal Women Should Set Nutritional Goals
Today, a woman can expect to live 1/3 of her life post menopause. The average age of menopause is 51, and right now there are over 40 million women in the U.S. over 50. It’s not just menopausal women who go through hormonal changes, but perimenopausal women also share similar hormone levels and related risks of hot flashes, weight change, high cholesterol, loss of bone density, and disturbed sleeping patterns.

A way to combat these changes is to set good nutritional goals. This includes an exercise plan and a stress reduction plan.

A good nutritional plan includes eating healthy, whole foods. The foods should be closest to the sun, this means fresh. Free-range meat should be eaten. It is the healthiest for everyone, not just menopausal women. Women of this age also have increased needs for Vitamin D. Limited good sun exposure will help create Vitamin D, but you should never get burned. Where most of us live we can't get enough sun year around to meet our Vitamin D needs. The best way to get a healthy source of Vitamin D is Cod liver oil. Not only does it provide a good source of Vitamin D as well as A, it is the best source for Omega 3 fatty acids. These acids are necessary for metabolism, brain and cell health, and for its cancer-fighting effects. Selenium and a B complex is also necessary to help prevent colon and breast cancer. These can be found in Brewer’s Yeast. Also antioxidants and phytonutrients are necessary as well. A great way to supplement these are with GreensFirst, a superfood supplement. This supplement provides you with the nutrients of a whole day's serving of fruits and vegetables. To learn more about these products click here.

Exercise is a central part of any woman’s healthy lifestyle, but there are specific challenges that menopausal women face that can be effectively addressed. Regular exercise raises metabolism and reduces body fat. Weight-bearing exercise and yoga help prevent osteoporosis. Some yoga poses can even be helpful at relieving hot flashes and sleeplessness. It can also help combat depressive symptoms, anxiety and flexibility challenges common during menopause.

Finding positive ways to combat stress are also important. Exercise is one good way, but you may need more deliberate strategies. Whether it's through journaling, discussion, meditation, hobbies, or imagery, it's important to find a way that is comfortable and effective for you.
