On a cold January morning at the Washington
DC Metro Station, a violinist played six
pieces by Bach. During that time,
approximately 2,000 people went through that
station, most of them on their way to work.
After 3 minutes of playing, a middle aged man
noticed a musician was playing. He slowed his
pace and stopped for a few seconds, and then
he hurried to catch his train.
Four minutes later, a woman put a dollar in
the till, and without stopping, she continued
to walk.
Six minutes after that, a young man leaned
against a wall and listened to him play, but
then he glanced at his watch and started to
walk again.
Ten minutes later, a 3-year-old boy stopped
to look at the violinist, but his mother
tugged him along hurriedly, and as they
continued to walk, the boy kept looking back
at the musician. This action was repeated by
several other children. Every parent, without
exception, forced them to move on.
Forty-five minutes had passed, and only 6
people stopped to listen for a while. About
20 people gave him money, but continued
walking at their normal pace.
He collected a total of $32.00.
When he finished playing, the silence took
over. No one noticed. No one applauded, nor
was there any recognition.
No one knew this, but the violinist was
Joshua Bell, one of the finest musicians in
the world. One piece that he played was one
of the most intricate pieces ever written
with a violin, worth $3.5 million. Just two
days prior, Joshua Bell sold out a theater in
Boston where the seats averaged $100 each.
True story. This was an article taken from
the Washington Post from April 4, 2007.
Joshua Bell playing incognito in the Metro
Station was organized by the Washington Post
as part of a social experiment about people's
perception, taste, and priorities.
This experiment raised these questions:
--In a commonplace environment at an
inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty?
--Do we stop to appreciate it?
--Do we recognize talent in an unexpected
context?
A possible conclusion reached from this
experiment could be:
--If we do not have a moment to stop and
listen to one of the finest musicians in the
world playing some of the most beautiful
music ever written with one of the most
magnificent instruments ever created, what
else are we missing?

This settles it folks! I, Dr. Johnson, have
found the reason for skyrocketing health care
costs. Yes, through my extensive and
exhaustive research I have come to the crux
of the issue. Do you want to know what it is?
Slow down, slow down! Let me relish in my
victory for a moment.....Okay, you ready?
Here goes.......it's COMPUTERS! Yep, I bet you
never would have guessed. Well, don't fret.
It took someone with far superior intellect,
stunningly good looks, and years of education
to come up with this. NO, not Dr.
Olson......ME! Okay, okay, I also happened to
see it on Google news, but remember..I found
it.
Let me show you why computers have nearly
bankrupted our country. Injury data
collected by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety
Commission's National Electronic Injury
Surveillance System, (let's just call them
USCPSCNEISS for short and say it three times
quickly...) found that over a 13-year
period, about 78,000 people sustained
computer-related injuries. I know what
you're thinking, WOW! Now let's do the math.
According to Wellmark BlueCross BlueShield,
the average emergency room charge is $1,049.
Let's take that $1,049 and multiply it by
78,000 visits and voila! This means that
every 13 years hospitals are taking in
$81,822,000. That is insane! How can we
expect insurance companies to keep up with
this kind of spending? At this rate they
can't afford to insure anyone.
Now that you have all the facts, I bet you're
wondering what the solution is. Well I
thought that's what you might be thinking
what with my superior intellect and all. No
fear, because I am prepared. Next time you
experience that computer related injury and
you just can't wait to go and spend that
$1,049 just pause and think, "Olson
Chiropractic only charges $55.00 for an
adjustment." That's right only $55.00, which
means for the price of the emergency room
visit you can have 19.07272727272
adjustments. Don't worry about the
.07272727272 adjustment, Dr. Olson and I will
figure that one out...I think. Well this has
been very enlightening for us all and I think
we have a lot to ponder.

Spiritual
---Survey Results---
-A survey of the general population stated
that 77 percent of patients believe
physicians should consider their spiritual
needs, and 73 percent believe they should
share their religious beliefs with their
physician.
-96 percent of physicians believe spiritual
well-being is important in health, however,
only 11 percent ask their patients frequently
about spiritual issues.
-In a survey of patients who meditate, 25
percent experienced increased spirituality,
and those patients had better medical
outcomes.
-One study measured the effects of prayer on
patients, and of 131 controlled trials, 58
percent showed a statistically significant
beneficial effect.

Emotional
---Antidepressants May Reduce Male
Fertility---
-The SSRI (selective seratonin reuptake
inhibitor) medication paroxetine (trade
names: Seroxat, Paxil) that is used to treat
depression, has been shown to increase
genetic damage in sperm by up to 50 percent.
-Dr. Peter Schlegl, the study's senior author
stated, "It is fairly well known that SSRI
antidepressants negatively impact erectile
function and ejaculation. This study goes one
step further...we can infer that as many as
half of men taking SSRIs have a reduced
ability to conceive."

Nutritional
---Sunshine Vitamin Spells Dieting Success---
-A study from the University of Minnesota
suggests that increased levels of vitamin D
(the sunshine vitamin) along with a reduced
calorie diet will lead to better weight loss.
-The study showed that increased levels of
both the precursor form of vitamin D as well
as the active form of vitamin D were
beneficial in weight loss. Higher levels of
both forms also predicted greater loss of
abdominal fat.
---Whole-Cooked Carrots Better for Fighting
Cancer---
-A study shows the anti-cancer properties of
carrots are enhanced by 25 percent if they
are cooked whole rather than chopped up
beforehand.
-"Chopping up your carrots increases the
surface area so more of the nutrients leach
out into the water while they are cooked,"
said lead researcher Dr. Kristen Brandt. "By
cooking them whole and chopping them
afterward, you are locking in both taste and
nutrients."
---Alcohol Increases Risk of Bowel Cancer---
-Drinking more than one alcoholic beverage a
day dramatically increases your risk of
developing bowel cancer.
-Other risk factors such as eating red or
processed meats, obesity, smoking, or
diabetes have about a 20 percent greater risk
of developing bowel cancer; however, the risk
for those who drink alcohol was 60 percent!

Structural
---Heartburn Drugs May Raise Hip Fracture
Risk---
-Researchers found that even short term use
of popular acid-reducing heartburn drugs may
raise the risk of hip fracture.
-Patients who had hip fractures were 30
percent more likely to have taken proton pump
inhibitors (such as Prevacid, Nexium,
Aciphex, Protonix, and Prilosec) and 18
percent more likely to have taken histamine-2
receptor antagonists (H2RAs such as Zantac).

Energetic
--Tai Chi Helps Ease Arthritis Pain--
-The George Institute for International
Health in Sydney, Australia released findings
that state Tai Chi produces positive effects
for improving pain and disability among
arthritis patients.
-The researchers are now beginning a trial to
determine if Tai Chi can help people with
chronic lower back pain as well.
-Tai Chi is a combination of movements and
breathwork that helps to consciously create
flow and movement in a person's energy system.
