Thoughts to Ponder
A hundred times every day I remind myself that my inner and outer life depend on the labors of other men, living and dead, and that I must exert myself in order to give in the same measure as I have received and am still receiving.
~ Albert Einstein ~
I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.
~ Albert Einstein ~
Love is a better teacher than duty.

Folate Good for Your Heart…and More
Folate may reduce heart disease in addition to preventing birth defects. A government study found that foods high in folic acid appear to have a striking effect against cardiovascular disease, preventing an estimated 48,000 deaths a year from strokes and heart attacks. Folic acid can also be beneficial in decreasing depression.

The following foods are good sources of naturally occurring Folic Acid.

Brussels sprouts Black-Eyed Peas Asparagus
Kale Spinach Endive/Escarole
Avocado Broccoli Mustard Greens
Kidney, Lima, Navy, Pinto Beans Green Peas and Chick Peas Strawberries
Yellow squash Okra Lettuce
Cauliflower Cabbage Artichoke
Tangerines Oranges Limes
Guava Mango Papaya
Grapefruit Peanuts Liver

Choose at least one vegetable/fruit from the top 4 rows. These have the highest amount of folic acid. Complement these vegetables with at least one vegetable from the lower tier vegetables, rows 5 and 6 and then choose a fruit from the last three rows. Peanuts are a good source of folic acid. Liver is a high source of folic acid, but many people do not enjoy this food.

Foods high in Iron
Iron is an important addition to most people's diet. It is best to get it from natural sources like foods and not supplements.

Liver (Pork, Chicken, Beef) Lean Meats Oysters
Clams Sardines Dry Beans
Dried Peas Fish (Tuna) Shrimp
Dried Fruits Turnip Greens Mustard Greens
Broccoli Green Peas Pork and Beans

Eating foods that are high in vitamin C helps your body use the iron that you can eat. Eat one of the following with your iron foods.

Orange Grapefruit 100% Juice
Tomatoes Pineapple Melon

Top Health Myths
Continuing our summer series.

Myth 4: Low-Fat Diets are Healthy
Your body cannot function properly without adequate amounts of fat—it influences everything from blood clotting to vitamin absorption to brain function. As such, there are many dangers associated with a low-fat diet such as:

* Raises bad (LDL) cholesterol
* Increased risk of prostate cancer
* Increased risk of injury
* Increases triglycerides
* May increase risk of stroke
* Worsens heartburn
* Denies children essential nutrients

Low fat diets may actually raise bad cholesterol. But don’t be fooled, low cholesterol is not always an indicator of good health. Too low of cholesterol is linked to other problems like aggression, depression, suicide, and stroke. It is important to get a good ratio of fats.

Many people tend to replace fats with refined grains, which is problematic. It is better to get good fats, some whole grains, and replace refined grains with mostly vegetable carbohydrates. Some people have trouble eating enough vegetables to be healthy. Though fresh and whole is best, we think we’ve found the next best thing.

Green First
A good way to get all of the nutrients from great organic vegetables is with Greens First. Each serving of this super food drink has the phytonutrient and antioxidant power of over 10 servings of fruits and vegetables. It is fortified with oat fiber. It contains 49 different super foods like supergreens, vegetables, fruits, probiotics, soluble fiber, herbs, spices, enzymes and lecithin.

It provides all the nutrients that have been shown to keep your arteries from hardening and help to lower your risk of cancer, diabetes, heart disease and stroke. It contains complete proteins. In fact, gram for gram it has much more protein than beef.

Greens First contains vital enzymes and fat emulsifiers which help break down foods into components your cells can more easily utilize and essential fatty acids (EFAs) which help keep cell membranes and skin soft and elastic. Enhanced digestion, absorption, regularity, and elimination are provided by the plant enzymes, fat emulsifiers, and special cholesterol lowering soluble fibers and probiotics (friendly symbiotic intestinal microorganisms) in Greens First. The simple way to gain the benefits of complex nutrition.

The “O”-Zone - When a name isn’t enough
Have you ever been given a diagnosis like; diverticulosis, torticollis, cephalgia, carpal tunnel, nephrosis, or other Latin names that describe the symptoms of a condition. I had a patient once that came in with a difficult complaint; ringing in the ears, also known as tinnitus. I told him that there was a good chance we could help him. I determined the underlying patterns of the condition through Chinese medicine, and started care. He only stayed for two visits and then went to see his M.D. He was informed that it was Tinnitus, a condition that medicine cannot help. He went home happy, knowing he had a name to his condition even though he now believed there was no remedy. Why is a name better than health? Why is it that a name is more comforting than the possibility of removing the condition?

This is like taking your car to a mechanic and he tells you, “Oh, I know what is wrong with your car, it is malfunctioning. I don’t know how to correct it, but if we inject a higher power fuel in your car it will keep running, even though it will destroy the seals sooner than normal, and the engine will burn up.” Would you settle with that level of care for your car? I hope not. Then why would you settle for that style of care for your body?

If you receive that kind of diagnosis for your body, ask an additional question; “What is that made of?” So I have cephalgia, or head pain, “What is that made of?” Is it muscle, nerve, circulation, or joint? Then ask, “What is that made of?” It is nerve oriented? It comes from a vertebrae that is out of place. “What is that made of?” An accident, stress, emotion, toxicity, or a spiritual issue? “What is that made of?”
Next time you get a diagnosis, be sure that the name is not enough. Find the cause and correct it so your whole health can return and your highest quality of life can continue.

Menopause Herb Study
Since hormone replacement therapy is falling out of favor, as more studies suggest a link between the drugs and breast cancer and heart disease, women have been turning to herbal remedies for relief from menopause symptoms. Research recently published in the Annals of Internal Medicine pretty much discounts the effectiveness of most of the alternatives in use today. Meaning alternative over the counter medications like store bought herbs. Black cohosh, seems to be effective. Black cohosh is a member of the buttercup family, and has been used for a number of ailments by Native Americans for many generations. Natural Progesterone is also an alternative that can help with menopause. Traditional Chinese Herbal remedies have long been very effective at curbing the symptoms of menopause. But most importantly the symptoms of menopause can be corrected with the underlying cause. Make sure that you find the cause and treat it. Treating the symptoms, even with herbs is just a method of management, not correction.

Beware of new over-the-counter menopause symptom relief. Some contain propylene glycol, used for the “pill” part, or the carrier for the medicine. This is a known carcinogen: it will not help your symptoms, but acts like more of a hindrance. Also, some M.D.s are now prescribing anti-depressants for hot flashes and sleeping difficulties related to menopause. Do not take these for this reason. It may help mask the problems, but at what consequence. Anti-depressants have recently been linked with an increase in suicide among teens and children. They are not the answer for menopause. Be very careful when a prescription drug for one use begins being prescribed for secondary uses. Just because the FDA deems it reasonably safe, does not mean it is good or effective. Once upon a time a drug called Benedictin was approved by the FDA for morning sickness, which led to birth defects in many children before being pulled from the market. Though testing is more stringent today than in the 1950s there are still inherent problems. Tests are skipped or combined and negative results suppressed, leaving the real facts concealed until the medicine is already on the market. These facts are not intended as a scare tactic but informational. It is safe and beneficial to be on the cautious side of all medicines. Medicine has a place in our society, but its overuse and the for-profit attitude puts many lives in danger. The best way to feel better is to truly heal.

The underlying cause must be healed, not just the symptoms suppressed. That is the real difference between the western medical model and the approach in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
