What is stress that is so deadly, anyway? I won’t use a definition from the dictionary, because it won’t add any light to the already murky topic. Is stress a situation? Is stress a circumstance? Is it an occurrence? What is it? Stress is no more than a belief about a situation. Do you know how many people complain about their job every day? When they finally get fired, they stress out. Why? For years they have been complaining about their lot in life. When it finally turns in a direction that can be better, they are stressed out and maybe even depressed. Read on or skip to next article: Top Health Myth 5: Fish is Good for You Stress is never an event, it is always a chosen perception of an event. A family member dies. Is that stressful? What if that family member molested you during your childhood and then framed you for a crime they committed and you spent ten years in jail. Are you still stressed out at their passing on? What if they were your favorite aunt who was like a second mother? Why is it more stressful in the one situation than the other? Does it really change your life directly? What do you perceive of death? Is it really a loss, or is it just a transition to another stage of our longer, eternal life? Why we get stressed out is founded purely on our perception of life. Do you believe in the absolute abundant nature of the universe? Are you positive that there will always be enough and to spare? Are you convinced of the love of God in your life? Are you founded on the idea that giving is what is important and that when you give out of the right intent, you can receive all that God will pass your way? Are you firm in the idea that dreams were meant to come true, not just to torture the poor and huddled masses? There is no dream that cannot be realized. There is no thought so grand it cannot come true. There is no man-made thing in this world that did not begin as an idea or a dream. When you ride in an airplane, zooming through the heavens at 600 mph, you are actually traveling on a dream and an idea made tangible. Every dream can come true. If we believe this, what is stress? I have a friend who I talked to the other day. I asked him how he had been. He responded, “Well, I died last week.” He had fallen off his horse, landed on his face on a rock. His spirit left his body. While out of his physical body he said his brother-in-law, who was riding with him, looked down on him as he lay faced down on the ground, smiled and slowly turned his horse around and rode casually back to the ranch house, apparently satisfied with his fall and accident. He then thought of his daughter. Instantly he was in her room watching her play Barbies. Then he felt drawn back to his body. He woke in great pain, with a new mind set on life. “I am definitely not afraid of death anymore” he stated. “It was incredible. I can’t wait.” His view of death allows no place for stress. He also has a new view on his brother-in-law. So what is stressing you? Watch for the 7 signs of wrong mindedness that leads to stress: 1) You have a specific outcome in mind. 2) You believe you know just what the other person was thinking when they did some thing to which you took offense. 3) When the plan becomes more important than the planning. 4) Events or objects are more important than people. 5) You find yourself being self-critical. 6) You lose confidence in the abundant nature of the universe. 7) Fear becomes your most honored advisor. If you find any of these signs present, know you are losing power over yourself; you are entering the stressful way of looking at life. Top Health Myths Continuing our summer series. Myth 5: Fish is Good for You We have polluted our waters to the point that this nutritious food is no longer safe for us. Fish would be a healthy source of Omega-3 fats but unfortunately, fish take on the chemicals we put in the water. Residues in fish can be as much as 9 million times the amount
found in the water! Read on or skip to the next article: Friends Help You Heal Faster Some of the contaminants found in fish flesh include: *Mercury *PCBs *Radioactive substances like strontium *Toxic metals such as cadmium, lead, chromium and arsenic Cod Liver Oil is the best way to get you Omega 3 fatty acids, but not all are created equal. Garden of Life Cod Liver Oil is a great, high quality, safe product for getting valuable omega-3 fatty-acids, which the western diet is lacking. These fatty acids are necessary for good brain and cell health. The most beneficial form of omega-3—containing two fatty acids, DHA and EPA—can be obtained from fish oil and cod liver oil. Adding the omega-3 found in fish and cod liver oils to your diet has been shown to: *Help fight and prevent heart disease, cancer, depression, Alzheimer’s, arthritis, diabetes, ulcers, hyperactivity and many other diseases. *Increase your energy level and ability to concentrate *Provide greater resistance to common illnesses such as flu and cold *Supports the thyroid gland *Decreases inflammation while Omega 6 fatty acids cause inflammation It is the best way to get naturally occurring vitamins, minerals and Omega-3 fatty acids. It also is a good source of DHA and EPA. It is an especially good source of natural Vitamin D and A. Why we need Vitamin D The major biologic function of vitamin D is to maintain normal blood levels of calcium and phosphorous. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin. It is found in food, but also can be made in your body after exposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun. Vitamin D aids in the absorption of calcium, helping to form and maintain strong bones. Without vitamin D, bones can become thin, brittle, soft, or misshapen. Evidence suggests that vitamin D may be protective against cancers like colon and skin cancer. Do we need Vitamin A? Vitamin A is a family of fat-soluble vitamins. Retinol is the one of the most active, or usable, forms of vitamin A, and is found in animal foods such as liver and eggs and in some fortified food products. Vitamin A plays an important role in vision, bone growth, reproduction, cell division and cell differentiation, which is the process by which a cell decides what it is going to become. It’s important to get natural forms of Vitamin A because toxicity can be a problem for females who oversupplement. Friends Help You Heal Faster Without a companion, an animal’s wounds won’t heal nearly as fast, according to a recent study on the effect social contact had on healing wounds on stressed hamsters Read on or skip to next article: Osteoporosis Cases Surge Amid New Drugs In fact, wounds on hamsters living with a sibling healed almost twice as quickly as those left alone and produces lesser amounts of cortisol, a stress hormone. This was one of several tests conducted by researchers to determine how social interaction affects the state of health and to better understand the mechanisms for healing. Of the four groups in which hamsters were divided, the wounds of those that were isolated and stressed were some 25 percent larger than the rest and remained that way for a week. Further Proof A second experiment compared the cortisol levels of paired, stressed hamsters versus single stressed ones in separate blood test completed 45 minutes apart. Cortisol levels in isolated hamsters were about 1.5 times higher than paired hamsters. Finally, the researchers experimented with the effects of treating two groups of socially isolated hamsters with either oxytocin or a substance that blocks its production. Hamsters in the oxytocin treatment group were given injections daily for five days prior to wounding and control animals were given just a single placebo. The treated animals’ wounds healed at a faster rate than the wound did on the control animals. Moreover, treatment with the oxytocin inhibitor delayed the healing process, even in paired animals. People Aren't Meant to be Alone These tests show, beyond a doubt, that having and maintaining relationships affects your total health far more than conventional medicine ever thought. Animals aren’t meant to be alone and neither are people. If there’s no one to reach out to at the moment, that’s as good a reason as any to tap into the healing energies prayer provides, either by spending a quiet moment away from others or dealing with your deepest concerns through journaling. EurekAlert August 3, 2004 Osteoporosis Cases Surge Amid New Drugs Widespread marketing coincides with increased diagnoses. The number of Americans diagnosed with osteoporosis surged sevenfold over the past decade, coinciding with the development and marketing of new drugs to treat the bone-thinning condition, a study found. As of 2003, there were an estimated 3.6 million people who had been diagnosed with osteoporosis, compared with half a million in 1994, according to the study by Stanford University researchers. Also, the number of doctor visits for the condition jumped to 6.3 million last year from 1.3 million in 1994. The increases coincided with the introduction of the bone-protecting drugs alendronate, sold as Fosamax, in 1995; raloxifene, or Evista, in 1997; and risedronate, or Actonel, in 1998. All three among the non-hormonal alternatives to estrogen supplements, which have long been used to prevent osteoporosis but have lost popularity because of recent studies linking them to heart problems, breast cancer and other risks. In 1998, estrogen was prescribed at 35 percent of osteoporosis-related doctor visits, but that fell to 3 percent last year, the study found. The estrogen alternatives have grown into a multibillion-dollar-a-year industry with widespread ads and slick promotional campaigns that have helped raise awareness about osteoporosis. The researchers said that probably helped increase diagnosis rates. Partly because of the newer drugs, “the whole way that we think about osteoporosis has shifted…to one of prevention,” said Dr. Randall Stafford, who led the study. “We hope to catch it early enough to treat it early enough to prevent fractures.” Osteoporosis, a growing problem Osteoporosis affects an estimated 10 million Americans, mostly women, who face a high risk of debilitating bone fractures, according to the foundation. An additional 34 million have less severe bone thinning that also increases the risk. Stafford and colleagues analyzed data from a physician survey conducted by IMS Health, a health care information company. About 3,500 randomly selected doctors participate each quarter in the survey. Prescriptions for calcium, an older standard treatment for osteoporosis, fell during the study period. The authors had no data on sales of over-the-counter calcium pills. Stafford said the decrease is a concern, because calcium remains an important way of helping to prevent osteoporosis. The Real Answer Getting calcium and vitamin D through diet and exercising are part of the package for preventing osteoporosis effectively. If calcium were the only answer, no one would have osteoporosis, right? Think about all the people that take an over-the-counter calcium supplement. It’s a huge amount of women, yet osteoporosis continues to rise. Weight bearing exercise and a more healthy diet are more key at preventing osteoporosis than a chemical formula for calcium. Calcium also should be accompanied by the correct ratio of magnesium and other minerals and vitamins to get the appropriate levels. So a calcium pill doesn’t really do it all. Good diet and exercise are still the oldest and best way to take care of your body. Back to top Dr. A.
