Your
right to buy and take nutritional supplements is under attack
There is a new bill in the Senate, if passed, would give the FDA
power to remove any nutritional supplement from the market even
if there is just one adverse report, regardless of whether there
is any evidence to support a cause and effect. If the FDA pulls
the supplement, the supplement manufacturer must prove that the
supplement is safe before it can be made available again, costing
a supplement company millions of dollars for each ingredient pulled
off the shelf. Compared to drugs, nutritional supplements have the
best safety record. There were 16 deaths last year, mostly due to
ephedra, compared to over 100,000 deaths each year from prescription
drugs. The FDA already has the power to pull a nutritional supplement
off the market if they believe it is harmful, so why the new bill?
Big money, pharmaceutical companies are behind this bill because
they realize more people are relying on nutritional supplements
for long-term health, and abandoning pharmaceuticals, cutting into
profits. They want to make it illegal for you to purchase the supplements,
unless it is by prescription only, and through pharmaceutical companies.
This would further increase the power of pharmaceutical companies
in dictating our health choices.
If you feel strongly about your right to control your own health
and making your own decisions, you can make a difference. Let your
senators know how you feel—that you are not in favor of Senate
Bill 722. One way to get more information on stopping S 722 and
supporting bill S 1538 (a bill to make supplements safer) is to
go to http://capwiz.com/nnfa/S722.html. If you want you can enter
your zip code, and it will automatically address your two senators
and allow you to personalize your message, and send it via e-mail,
or you can call your senators’ offices and let them know how
you feel. The U.S. Capitol switchboard is (202) 224-3121. Do your
part to help maintain our vital freedoms.
The “O” Zone—Healing from the Inside Out
Healing from any chronic condition means we get to change. A chronic
condition is any condition that is present for over 6 weeks, even
if it comes and goes. To change the way the body works to allow
healing we must begin with our most basic parts. At our most elemental-level
we are spirit beings. To change the way our body has worked to a
new way of functioning requires that we change and all change begins
in our spirit. Since our spirit is not something that we can adjust,
operate on, remove, put a splint on or massage, we must use more
subtle methods. All of these methods require our personal participation.
We participate by:
1. Becoming aware of ourselves, thoughts, feelings, emotions, and
our divine connection.
2. Having a correct idea of what our potential is, and having a
clear view of this possibility.
3. A strong desire to become the change is critical, with a willingness
to accept the consequences of this essential change.
4. Accepting personal responsibility for all your feelings.
5. Making a persistent plan to create this transition in ourselves.
Once we have this plan we can begin to instill change in our thoughts,
self talk, desires, actions, and behaviors. It often takes time
to change and it often takes time to heal. The body has a sequence
of transition it must go through to heal. The length of the condition
and the severity of the condition will both be significant factors
to becoming the best and most healthy you can be. To have a disease
we must only become incongruent with health. We only become healthy
when we become congruent with health: congruent in our spirit, emotions,
nutrition, structure, and energetic nature or SENSE. Always keep
your face to the sun and the shadows will always fall behind. Always
be congruent with health and disease has no place in you.
Tomatoes are Tops
This versatile fruit (that’s right, tomatoes are a fruit)
is high in vitamins A and C, and is one of the best sources of lycopene,
an antioxidant that may reduce the risk of prostate cancer and heart
disease. According to season based nutrition we should decrease
how much of them we eat in the winter. Doesn’t that leave
us deficient of essential nutrients? Nature has solved that problem.
Canned tomato products can deliver up to ten times more lycopene
than vine-ripe fruits. (The canning process breaks down tomato cell
walls, making it easier for the body to absorb lycopene.) You can
find healthier alternatives to sugared canned tomatoes at a health
foods grocery store. Here’s a recipe idea:
Caprese Salad
-- 2 pints cherry tomatoes, halved
-- 4oz. Part-skim mozzarella, cut into 1/4inch cubes (optional)
-- 1/3 cup slivered green olives
-- 1/3 cup chopped fresh basil
-- 2T balsamic vinegar
-- 1 T. olive oil
-- 1/2 t. salt
Combine all ingredients in bowl and toss. Serves 4 (per serving139
