Dear Alan,
As we welcome the Fall season, let's take a
moment and observe the beauty of Nature's
transition. Ask yourself, am I going through
transitions in my own life right now? What
can I do to transition smoothly, without
dwelling on life's little hiccoughs? Fall is
the time of year of the Lung and Large
Intestine. Their spiritual energy is the
energy of letting go. Think of what you need
to let go of as the season matures and
progresses. Part of letting go, in every
area of life, is cleansing, or detoxifying,
the body.
Cleansing your body and mind are great ways
to help transition more smoothly. Whether
you've spent the summer eating too many
barbecued pork steaks or have bogged yourself
down emotionally with too many life changes,
now is a great time of year to consider
detoxifying your life. Keep reading on for
some ways to rid your life of physical,
emotional, or spiritual toxins....

"O"Zone
Expectations
What is the cause of all stress?
There should be a song about
it...'Expectations.' All stress begins with
expectations that go unmet. Until we attach
an outcome and have an expectation, we will
not experience stress.
Outcomes such as, "If I do this (ie; make his
dinner), then they will do that (ie; bring me
flowers, make the bed, or even be nice to
me)." Ouch! That is just asking for sadness,
frustration, or disappointment. Any time we
feel sad, depressed, upset, angry, or
fearful, our expectations have gone unmet.
Why is it we keep having these expectations
when they lead to so much pain?
I have no idea! Why do you do it?
Okay, I'll give it a try. The one thing in
life we are addicted to is power: The power
to choose; The power to use our
divinely-given right to make a choice. Each
choice is an exercise in creation. We either
choose right and create greater order in our
lives, or we choose wrong and create greater
disorder. By conventional terms, order is
righteousness and disorder is
unrighteousness, or sin.
Virtues are states of being that are attained
by the persistent practice of creating order.
Virtues are not based on the outcome of a
situation. The virtues are states of being
such as love, patience, peace, joy,
gratitude, and faith. Think about it...Does a
mother love her child only if it acts the way
she wants? Of course not. She loves the child
even if he has poopy pants...Unless the child
is 16. Then the mother develops a new set of
expectations. She will definitely not wipe
him down and put clean underwear on him with
a smile on her face. But what if that 16-year
old was handicapped? The mother would have
different expectations still, and would
perhaps, even then, wear the smile that grows
like a blossom on the branches of the
love-filled heart.
Expectations not only make or break our
hearts, but they will make or break your
soul. An inner atmosphere of gratitude will
annul the need for expectations and lead to a
life of peace and love. Gratitude not only
denies expectations, but engenders enjoying
the current of life as it flows through and
around us. This is the core product of a
healthy, vibrant life.
Next time you get upset or frustrated, look
at what your underlying expectations were.
Drop them, and your anger will go away. I
promise!

Dr. J's SENSE of Humor
I saw an interesting article about
weight-loss the other day. Only, this article
made no mention of exercise or watching your
diet, but instead, it was about a new miracle
pill coming soon. The manufacturers of this
drug have simply combined two old products
into one new product. I know what you're
thinking..."How could an anticonvulsant and a
stimulant be combined to help you lose
weight?" I ask you...."Who cares? It works,
right?" These drug companies are going to be
rolling in dough from this one. Even after
they pay off all the lawsuits brought against
them for the harm this drug will cause. Does
anybody remember Fen-Phen? Of course you
remember Fen-Phen! You could lose all the
weight you want if you just take a couple
pills each day. So what if you lost a couple
heart valves and added some water to your
lungs in the process. You looked fabulous! I
bet the commercial for the new drug will go
something like this:
---"Finally! The long 'weight' is over! Thanks
to modern science, you can now shed those
unwanted pounds. We have taken Phentermine, a
stimulant that acts as an appetite
suppressant and combined it with Topiramate,
an anticonvulsant. This combination is
deadly...if you happen to be a fat cell! It's
like shooting ducks in a barrel. Eat what you
want, and never exercise again! Side effects
are minimal.
**shortness of breath (even with mild
exertion); swelling; rapid weight gain; chest
pain; fast or uneven heartbeat; feeling like
you might pass out; unusual thoughts or
behavior; feeling restless or confused;
dangerously high blood pressure (severe
headache, blurred vision, buzzing in your
ears, anxiety, confusion, uneven heartbeats,
seizure); feeling nervous or anxious;
headache; dizziness; tremors; trouble
sleeping (insomnia); dry mouth; unpleasant
taste; diarrhea; constipation; itching;
severe allergic reactions (rash, hives,
itching, difficulty breathing, tightness in
chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or
tongue); blood in the urine; bone pain;
decreased coordination; depression; double
vision or other vision changes; eye pain;
loss of consciousness; memory problems;
menstrual changes; mental or mood changes;
muscle or joint pain, cramps, or weakness;
rapid or shallow breathing; red, swollen,
blistered, or peeling skin; ringing in the
ears; severe or persistent loss of appetite;
severe stomach, side or back pain;
significant weight loss; speech problems;
stupor; suicidal thoughts or actions; tremor;
trouble thinking, concentrating, or
remembering things; trouble walking;
unexplained fever; unusual bruising or
bleeding; unusual eye movements; fatigue.**
"As you can see, these side effects are small,
and you can be too, if you just take this
simple pill each day. So what are you waiting
for? Ask your doctor if this is right for
you!" (whispers We're pretty sure it
is)---
Let's keep a clear perspective regarding our
health. There is so much deception out there,
and we need to be watchful. Losing weight can
be a good goal, but even good goals come with
a hefty price (read side effects again). Our
goal at Olson Chiropractic is to help you
get, stay, and enjoy your health in all
facets of life through safe and natural
means. It does take hard work to be healthy,
and it should take hard work. The blessings
that come from good health are immeasurable.
I like the quote by John Henry Cardinal
Newman: "Health of body and mind is a great
blessing, if we can bear it."

What's Making SENSE in the News
Spiritual
>>Ways to Help Restore Your Faith<<
Exerpt by Dr. Wayne Dyer
--Here are five ways to find faith after it has
been lost or shaken:
1. Realign with the Universe: Be open to the
radical idea that your loss of faith is
really a misalignment on your part. You play
some kind of role in determining what shows
up in your life, so begin to see everything
as an alignment.
2. Make the Most of Your Situation: Make the
declaration that you live in a friendly and
supportive universe. It has been said that
when the student is ready, the teachers will
appear. The teachers are always
there--however, the question is whether
you're ready to take advantage of them and
turn your situation into an opportunity.
3. Change Your Thinking: Instead of looking
for occasions to be offended, start to look
for occasions to be supported. Walt Whitman
said, "To me, every cubic inch of space is a
miracle." Take on that "miracle mindset."
Begin to see the mystery and miraculousness
of all things, and ask yourself where it all
comes from. If creation is possible, then
whatever it is you've lost faith in can be
recreated if you believe in a supportive
universe.
4. Help Others: Extend the peace that you
want for yourself to someone else. Change
your inner mantra from "What's in it for me?"
to "How may I serve?" Almost instantly, when
you shift attention off yourself and reach
out to others, the thing that needs to be
fixed, will be fixed.
5. Create Affirmations: Instead of looking at
what is wrong with the world, begin to look
at what is right. When your faith is lost or
shaken, ask yourself, 'What is the lesson
here?" When you lose everything, a time will
come when you realize why you had to have
that experience. Try to bring that
realization to the present moment. Ask: "What
is the lesson in this for me now? How is this
going to help me become a person who is going
to fulfill my own destiny?" Create
affirmations that match up with your revised
view of the world, such as:
* The assistance I need is on its way.
* The right people are going to show up.
* All things are possible when I decide to
have faith.
* I banish all doubt.

Nutritional
>>Eating Meat in Middle Age Helps Keep
Seniors Independent<<
--A new study in Japan suggests that eating
meat at least every two days during middle
age may help maintain independent daily
activities when older.
--The study contained men and women ages
47-49. The team surmises that eating meat a
few times a week may help the elderly better
preserve muscle mass due to increased protein
intake, which, in turn, may play a role in
elders' ability to continue to perform daily
activities.
>>Fruit and Veggie Intake in Pregnant Women
Reduces Risk of Upper Respiratory Tract
Infection<<
--Boston University School of Medicine
researchers have observed in a study of
pregnant women that consumption of at least
seven servings per day of fruits and
vegetables moderately reduced the risk of
developing an upper respiratory tract
infection (UTRI).

>>Swine Flu: Why if...?<<
--It is unclear whether the CDC will rethink
its advice on how long people with swine flu
should hole up. Long breaks from school and
work do not seem worth it for a virus that
now seems to cause mostly mild illness,
said the CDC's flu chief, Nancy Cox. Swine
flu is spreading so widely now that confining
the sick does less good, she said.
>>Walking Cuts Breast Cancer Risk by 40
Percent<<
--Dr. Carolyn Kaelin, a Harvard surgeon and
breast cancer survivor, says, "Brisk
walking--about 3.0 mph on a treadmill--for
three to five hours per week, or about 30
minutes per day, can net big benefits for
breast cancer survivors."
--"Recurrence rates and deaths from breast
cancer decreased by 40 percent among those
who exercise at least 3-5 hours per week,
compared with those who are sedentary,"
Kaelin added.
