| Olson Chiropractic S.E.N.S.E Spiritual, Energetic, Nutritional, Structural & Emotional Wellness Newsletter – October 18, 2004 ******************************************************************** Thoughts to Ponder In every person who comes near you look for what is good and strong; honor that; try to imitate it, and your faults will drop off like dead leaves when their time comes. -John Ruskin- There's no such thing as Perfection. But, in striving for perfection, we can achieve excellence. -Vince Lombardi- I wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving. -Kahlil Gibran- O-Zone Abraham Lincoln, from his First Inaugural Address on March 4, 1861: "We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature." This year we are filled to overflowing with the political rhetoric and emotionally charged feelings. I have rarely seen such strong emotions on both sides of the fence, but I know Mr. Lincoln had. I do know that each party and candidate have strong feelings and care for the issues they trumpet. More importantly is that we stand above the rhetoric and don’t strain our good moral character to stoop to meanness and petty feelings about politics that ultimately are far less significant than the bonds of affection that can and should draw us together to be great individually and collectively as a people and a nation. Our life, health, love and spirits will be harmed if we remain fixed on the harsh elements of humanity that have been drawn into the political discourse. Be a human being first, then a political affiliation somewhere down the road. Recipe Cilantro Lime Chicken Cacciatore 2lb. Free Range Chicken breast sliced into 1-oz. Cubes 1Tbsp. Serves 4 From The Maker’s Diet, p. 244 Nature’s Bone Builder We are happy to offer a new way to encourage strong bones. Bone Matrix is a product with ipriflavone, a compound naturally occuring in foods and plants. Scientific studies have confirmed the bone-health benefits of ipriflavone. It has been shown to: - Stimulate the synthesis and secretion of calcitonin, a hormone that promotes calcium metabolism. - Stimulate bone formation while increasing bone mineral density. - Decrease fracture rate. Ipriflavone has an impressive scientific record, having been the subject of more than 60 different clinical studies across the world. There have been more than 16 randomized, placebo-controlled human studies, with all of them demonstrating either maintenance of bone mineral density or an increase. Susan Brown, Ph.D., author of Better Bones, Better Bodies, is presently conducting various ipriflavone pilot studies at the Osteoporosis Education Project in East Syracuse, new York, of which she is the director. “Ipriflavone holds more promise as a safe and effective bone-building agent than the drugs presently being used.” What do congestive heart failure, gum disease and obesity have in common? The answer: very often, a deficiency of coenzyme Q-10. Coenzyme Q10 is a powerful antioxidant both on its own and in combination with vitamin E and is vital in powering the body’s energy production (ATP) cycle. CoQ10 is found throughout the body in cell membranes, especially in the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, spleen, pancreas and adrenal glands. The total body content of CoQ10 is only about 500-1500mg and decreases with age. - CoQ10 is essential to the heart. - Boosts energy and brain power, especially if you participate in extended physical exercise. It also boosts immunity. - Keeps your gums healthy. Tissue affected by gingivitis is deficient in CoQ10 and experiments have shown that supplementation with as little as 50 mg/day can decrease inflammation. The level of CoQ10 in human organs peaks around the age of 20 years and then declines fairly rapidly. The decrease in CoQ10 concentration in the heart is particularly significant with a 77 year-old person having 57 % less CoQ10 in the heart muscle than a 20 year-old. Tylenol-New Evidence Tough to Swallow Colds and Flu and Aches and Pains are starting early this year. Before you grab for that old standby Tylenol, you might rethink your choice. Mounting evidence is showing that Tylenol isn’t the safe pain medication we once thought.
Many doctors and hospitals recommend Tylenol (acetaminophen) more than any other pain killer. Acetaminophen sales account for $1 billion annually. This “super-safe” painkiller is responsible for more calls to Poison Control Centers than anything else in America—over 100,000 calls yearly. This drug accounts for more than 50,000 annual visits to emergency centers and hospitals. And even scarier, it accounts for more than 700 cases of liver failure per year. Tracking acute liver failure cases in 22 hospitals showed that a whopping 38% were due to acetaminophen. The risks go up if you take Tylenol with other acetaminophen drugs. And the risks can be deadly if you take Tylenol with alcohol—just three drinks with Tylenol can cause liver failure. Think this can’t be true since doctors and hospitals routinely recommend Tylenol? In 2001 a healthy 23-year-old non-drinker took Tylenol and codeine for 10 days following a wrist injury at the recommendation of his doctor. This was followed by another 10 days of over-the-counter Tylenol (at his doctor’s advice). Liver failure ensued, and he was dead in a week. This was a healthy young nondrinker. What went wrong? Overuse of Tylenol. This drug can kill you. Most people don’t know this, and some use Tylenol like it is a precautionary method, like before playing a round of golf. This drug is especially dangerous if you combine it with similar, over-the-counter “safe” drugs. Tylenol is the most popular acetaminophen, but the following all contain this drug: | Tylenol | Percocet | Vicodin | | 4-way Cold | Bayer Select Flu Relief | Benedryl Cold | | Comtrex Hot Flu Relief | Dristan Cold and Flu | Nyquil Liquicaps | | Tylenol Cold and Flu | Vicks Dayquil Liquidcaps | Aspirin-Free Excedrin Caplets | | Anacin-3 | Children’s Tylenol Cold | Dorcol Children’s Fever and Pain Reducer | | Feverall Children’s | Infants’ Anacin-3 | Tylenol Children’s Elixir | | Robitussin Honey Flu | | St. Joseph’s Aspirin-Free Fever Reducer for Children | Imagine giving your infant an “aspirin-free” over-the-counter product to reduce his or her fever and pain—and your child has a reaction! Or you harm yourself inadvertently by drinking and taking Tylenol. These are the reasons why you should treat your children’s fevers and colds naturally as well as other bone, muscle and joint problems. The benefit of acetaminophen and Tylenol is now close to being outweighed by the risks. If you ever suffer liver failure from Tylenol you would give anything in this world to have your headache back. The News Gets Worse for Tylenol On July 27, 2004, the 25-year-old Women’s Health Study reported that women who chronically take one tablet of Tylenol or acetaminophen daily have double the odds of developing kidney damage. And if these can induce this much damage, can you imagine the carnage induced by today’s new arthritis super aspirin drugs! Because aspirin has its own set of dangers and risks other than acetaminophen’s and should not be used as a replacement. “’Super-Safe’ Tylenol?” Health Alert September 2004, Volume 21, Issue 9 A Fond Farewell from Gina As I’m writing this, all I can think of is the closing song from the Mickey Mouse Club. “Now it’s time to say goodbye…” It is time for me to say goodbye to all of you.
