What
is a Subluxation?
What does that word subluxation actually mean? This is a term used
by chiropractors that defies easy description; there are nearly
300 terms used to describe it. One common definition is a displaced
vertebra causing pressure on nerves, which interferes with brain/body
interaction. The subluxation leads to body malfunction or dis-ease,
which can result in lowered resistance to disease, pain, imbalance,
fatigue, and can pave the way to illness. Subluxations are very
common, nearly everyone has them, but often they are painless. Sometimes
pain associated with a subluxation is located far from where the
subluxation occurs. Therefore, periodic spinal examinations to locate
and correct the vertebral subluxation should be a part of every
family’s heath care routine.
Herbal
Spotlight
Turkey day is around the corner, and at the holidays we tend to
indulge ourselves a little more than usual. This indulgence can
put extra strain on the digestive system. Hawthorne berries by Life
Rising are highly effective at aiding in digestion. Not only are
they effective in aiding digestion, but they can promote circulation,
decrease cholesterol, maintain normal blood pressure, and reduce
heart problems.

Thank You
We want to give a special thanks to Kim, Craig, Peggy, Charles,
Jenny, Steve, Sandy, Laura, and Russell for their referrals this
past month. We appreciate your help in spreading the word about
our goal of total health, not just pain-free living. We always look
forward to helping more people live healthy lives. In random order
our new patients this month desire care for stress, numbness in
extremities, headaches, swollen lymph glands, digestion, allergies,
nerve interference, weight management, aches, for pain in foot,
shoulder, arm, neck, and lower back, and for our favorite condition,
wellness.
“In Office” (Case Story of the Month)
A. came to Dr. Olson experiencing foot pain caused by plantars fascitis.
After a thorough evaluation and exam, Dr. Olson created a personalized
treatment plan addressing “A’s” underlying condition.
A plan of chiropractic care and acupuncture was utilized, that promoted
freedom of nerve flow in the spine and balance in the body’s
energy. This care causes the brain and nerve system to function
at peak capacity and maintain balance. With an increased efficiency
in the nerve system the body has extra energy left over to use in
other ways. Now “A” not only has reduced pain and effects
of plantars fascitis, but a pain free spine. A. is also enjoying
a significant increase in energy.
You too can improve the way you feel. Focus on your health, and
remember the Healing Sense. It’s the five areas of life that
may be out of balance: Spiritual, Emotional, Nutritional, Structural
or Energetic.
Recipe Tip – The Sweeter Side of the Potato
Sweet Potatoes are plentiful in the fall and there are many fun
and different recipes that incorporate them plus they are a good
source of Vitamin A and Beta-Carotene. They can be substituted for
most recipes requiring regular potatoes, and they work as a main
or side dish. Try them as soup base or even in desserts. You can
also freeze sweet potatoes you have cooked and mashed to use in
dishes later. Incorporate this versatile vegetable in your diet
this fall. Here’s one recipe idea, modify it and make it your
own:
Spicy Stuffed Sweet Potatoes
4 med. sweet potatoes, 2 lg. bell peppers, diced, 1 c butter, 1/8
t. cumin, salt to taste, 1 1/2 c. pepper jack cheese, 1 c sour cream,
freshly squeezed lime juice, 2 T. minced white onions, 2 T. minced,
fresh coriander. (For the ultra health savvy you can sub. chicken
broth for butter and yak’s milk for sour cream.)
Bake pricked sweet potatoes at 350 degrees for 1.5 hours, and then
remove from oven, but leave the oven on. Cut potatoes in half lengthwise
and scoop out most of flesh. Mash w/fork, but leave chunky, add
broth, cumin and salt. Scoop mixture back into potato. Sprinkle
w/cheese and peppers. Mix sour cream and lime juice. Bake until
cheese melts. Garnish w/remaining peppers, onions, coriander and
the sour cream.
Study in the Press
Therapy Better Than Drugs -Reuters, May 24, 2002
A study from Vanderbilt University suggests that cognitive therapy
treatment may be a better way to manage depression than pharmaceuticals.
The cost and effectiveness for both types of treatment were about
the same over a four-month period, but the cognitive therapy appears
to have a more permanent effect, with relapses occurring much less
often. In the long term cognitive therapy (which is slower to show
results initially) appears to be much more effective, both clinically
and economically.
