Dear Alan,

What Triples Your Weight Risk?

Eating Quickly Until Full Triples Weight Risk

The combination of eating quickly and eating until full trebles the risk of being overweight, according to a study published on bmj.com.

Until the last decade or so, most adults did not have the opportunity to consume enough energy to enable fat to be stored. However, with the increased availability of inexpensive food in larger portions, fast food, fewer families eating together, and eating while distracted (e.g. while watching TV), eating behaviors are changing, and this may be contributing to the obesity epidemic.

The authors conclude that a combination of eating until full and eating quickly has "a supra-additive effect on overweight."

As important as the food you choose, is the lifestyle you choose. Eat more slowly, don't watch TV while you eat, and eat until satisfied, not until full.

Slow down. Remember, "So much time, so little to do."

A Magical Solution (continued from last month)

Allow yourself to experience the initial rush of emotion of whatever circumstance you are in, but commit yourself to no action. After two minutes of that emotional rush, that is spawned by a cascade of chemicals of emotion, then decide to decide. Decide to take action; healthy action. Decide how you feel about this situation and how you want to feel about it, and look for a pathway to that desired place. Ask a different question. Think of your circumstance in a different way.

When a magician wants to create a new illusion, they will first look at the outcome they want, and then figure how they can make it happen. We can apply the same magic in life. How do you want to feel and think? The reality is that life is good, abundant, and peaceful all the time.

Have you have seen the TV commercial of the little boy who stands over home plate on an empty baseball diamond and throws a ball in the air to hit, saying to himself, "I am the greatest hitter in the world"? He swings and misses. "Strike one." He repeats the statement, with renewed enthusiasm, "I am the greatest hitter in the world. He throws the ball straight up in the air, and as it drips in front of him, he swings and misses again, "Strike two." Now he bears down, turns his hat around, spits on his hands, rubs them together, and repeats with even greater emphasis, "I am the GREATEST HITTER in the WORLD." He tosses the ball in the air, and swings and misses again. "Strike THREE." In a momentary stupor he stares at the ball on the ground, that three times he, the greatest hitter in the world had whiffed at. How could this be? Suddenly, his eyes go wide, he smiles a huge smile, and shouts, "I am the greatest PITCHER in the world."

He went from devastation to exaltation in moments, but the circumstance never changed. But his thought pattern did.

So we can connect to devastation or to the reality of exaltation. What is required for us to make such a state of being real for us? We have to accept it and believe it.

This is an excerpt from my book: "When my oldest daughter was about ten-years-old, there was a young boy who took a liking to her. He became a very persistent suitor. He would call her nearly every day. She never wanted to talk to him. She tried to communicate to him that she was not interested in him or in having a boyfriend, but he kept calling.

"I started talking to him more when he would call. One day, as I was chatting with him I told him, "You certainly can talk." He responded, "My teacher told me I have a big mouth." "Really," I responded a little surprised that a teacher would say something like that. "Did that bother you that your teacher told you that?" I asked him. "No, I took it as a compliment. Why would I want to be offended? I just took it as a compliment. It meant to me that I can talk well, and I like to talk. I wasn't offended," he replied. What a great choice! Look at the power that choice had on that boy. The teacher's statement could have damaged his self-opinion if he had chosen to take it in a different way. He could have become shy, withdrawn, and self-conscious. Instead he chose to take it as a compliment. You cannot offend someone without their permission. He retained the right to not be offended. He made a wise choice, and he was right; he was a good talker. That was real. He did not have a big mouth; it was the same size as every other child's mouth. He was not concerned with what the teacher thought of him. He was only concerned with what he felt about himself. What someone else thought about him was that person's choice and problem, and he preserved the incredible power of good self-image."

This young man could have gone along with the teachers view of life , or he could create his own view of reality. I like his view. It served him well; it helped everyone around him in his family, all of his friends, and his classmates. I call that magic of the first order.

No matter our circumstance, we choose our response. We choose to paint our own reality. How do you want to feel about yourself? How do you want to feel about your family? How do you want to feel about your life? What kind of view do you need to have about yourself and your circumstance to make this view an active reality? Ponder on it. Change yourself to match it, and you can go from being a batter to a pitcher in seconds. All you need to do is make some magic. Change your mind.

The demon of adaptation seeks to thrive by sucking the marrow out of excellence and inspiration.

Health is an increasing level of congruency within our divine potential. The more our choices bring us peace, the greater our health, and the greater our potential is being manifest. It is just Magic!

Osteoporosis Meds Linked to Heart Problems

-Bisphosphonates, medications commonly prescribed to build thinning bones, have been linked to a serious heart problem

-A review of recent research found that atrial fibrillation, an erratic heartbeat that can lead to heart attacks and stroke, may be linked to the bone-building drugs which include Fosamax and Boniva.

Number of Kids on Medication Jumps Alarmingly

-The number of children who take medication for chronic diseases has jumped dramatically, another troubling sign that many of the youngest Americans are struggling with obesity, doctors say.

-The number of kids who take pills for type 2 diabetes has more than doubled between 2002 and 2005.

-There were also dramatic increases in prescriptions for high cholesterol, asthma, and ADD or ADHD. There was also growth in prescription drug use for depression and high blood pressure.

-Dr O's Comment: It's not just more sick kids. It is a medical system that thinks a prescription will fix everything, and obviously, so do many parents. This is an alarming trend. If we fed our kids well, played with them, and talked to them more, most of these medications would not be needed.
